Couture Wedding Dresses by Alina Pizzano

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Alina Pizzano’s new collection first hand. You might remember, Alina let me borrow the dress for the Anthropologie shoot, so I was super excited to see her new designs. Above, a lace dress with a slouchy back creates a modern, but feminine, silhouette.

This season, Alina showed several asymmetrical dresses. I’m in love with this glamorous version above. It feels like a modern update on Marilyn Monroe’s famous pink bow dress.

For the bride who wants just a hint of sparkle this dress with its stunning sequin detail would be perfect. The sequins would be so pretty catching the light while you say your vows.

I love the dress on the left for the gathered fabric detail with its use of two textures, the light brocade and silk. It adds a bit of drama to a timeless silhouette. The pink dress, on the right, has a certain ethereal Grecian goddess quality to it. It would be pretty at both a beach wedding and a formal ballroom reception.

But the  piéce de résistance, is this stunning ball gown made out of 300+ yards of trim. Coincidentally, I bought this same trim in February for inspiration for my next photo shoot. Needless to say, I was blown away when I saw the layers upon layers of the same trim used to create this stunning dress. There’s only one word to describe this dress: couture!

Bridal Style Revealed: Carolina Herrera preview

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The Melrose Place location of Bridal Style Revealed allowed guests to experience the best in bridal design, straight from the designer showroom. Case-in-point? Carolina Herrera.

SDC10435

This brilliant designer was gracious enough to preview her spring 2010 bridal collection for Unveiled event guests, mini-fashion show style. The dresses? Inspired by the greatest artists, who in their own work have displayed elements of fashion, Carolina Herrera blew our bridal minds out of the water! Here are five of my favorites, attached to work from the artists said to have inspired the collection.

Dress #1: A Vincent van Gogh inspired floral jacquard dress with ruffle applique’.

Anthropologie Wedding- The Details

I love vintage suitcases and I thought holding fans would be so cute.

©kirstenellis058

I tied grosgrain ribbons in two colors to the base of the fans to add some color.

©kirstenellis139

For the flower girls I found these copper candles holders that were the perfect scale for their baskets.

©kirstenellis111

I tied each side with grosgrain ribbon and filled them with baby’s breath.

©kirstenellis136

The flower girls were too cute!

For favors, Santa Barbara Preserves made rose jelly and put these in adorable mini canning jars.

©kirstenellis068

We used the same dashed pattern on the napkin as a border for the label. Santa Barbara Preserves custom made rose jelly, but she can make any flavor (her habanero raspberry jam is so good!)

Anthropologie Wedding- The Bride

Monday, March 15th, 2010

©kirstenellis250

I borrowed a dress from Alina Pizzano for my bride. It was a light, light, pink with a brocade texture to the fabric. I love the cut, with its sweet heart neckline and simple train.

©kirstenellis098

For styling, I added a light blue grosgrain ribbon to the waist of the dress.

©kirstenellis234

For her bouquet I used white ranunculus, paper whites, muscari, berzilla balls, and queen anne’s lace.

©kirstenellis018

In her hair, a simple piece of aqua netting was tied into a headband.

©kirstenellis151

I found this killer vintage necklace in Paso Robles after I finished a site visit with one of my brides. I love the slightly art deco feel it has and the aqua color is to die for!

Inspiration Board #38: Red & White Southern Charm Wedding

Monday, November 30th, 2009

red_white_plantation_wedding

I love the idea of a chic red and white wedding with Southern charm. I picture this wedding taking place at an old plantation, where sweet tea would be served as a welcome drink and fans would be handed out to guests to cool themselves. I would mix red and white checks and stripes on the tables for a charming homey look. Rocking chairs would be setup on the porch for guests to enjoy during cocktail hour. Heirloom family love letters would be put on display next to the guest book. Apple pie and red velvet cake would be served for dessert. And, of course, the bride would wear boots.

Description: Red, white, southern charm, plantation chic

Fashion Wedding

bride_bridesmaids_wendy2

I’m so excited to share with you the fashion from Wendy’s wedding! Take it away Wendy:

The ceremony was inspired by a short film in Akira Kurasawa’s “Dreams”; the fox wedding.  –Have you seen this?  The music played was Michael Nyman’s “String Quartet No.2: 3.III”, which is more unusual but beautiful; when it started, the bridesmaids and I started the long walk from behind the hill top to the top of the aisle.

bride_bridesmaids_wendy3

The girls were instructed to keep their parasols down over their faces, and to walk tightly in pairs of 2 (except for my sister in the lead).  Guests had no idea I was in the back of this long, colorful train.

bridesmaid_wendy

One by one, they peeled off down the aisle (folding up their parasol and trading it with my dad for their appropriate bouquet), and then stood along the side of the chairs instead of in the front front. The flower girls tossed pink carnation petals, which I liked because they kind of remind me of peach blossoms (again, an inspiration from Kurasawa’s “Dreams”).

dad_bride_wendy

When it was finally my turn, I kept my triangular-shaped white parasol over my face until the right moment in the music and, like the others, closed it and took my bouquet from my dad and walked down the aisle with him.

Thank you for sharing Wendy!

Vera Wang Fall 2010

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

verawang_fall2010_1

This past Wednesday I had the amazing opportunity to go to the Vera Wang Fall 2010 show. In the above dress, I loved how the fabric was layered asymmetrically to create volume, and in person, you could really see the huge amount of detail and craftsmanship that goes into each dress.

verawang_fall2010_8

I love how the bands of fabric swirl from top to bottom to create the shape of the dress. Also, the asymmetrical neckline and beading on the belt really enhance the subtle s-shape of the dress.

verawang_fall2010_7

The simplest dress shown was this one-shoulder column dress. I love the crisscross pattern on the bodice!

verawang_fall2010_6

The layers of cut shredded fabric and the detail on this dress is just stunning. To me it looks like a modern take on feathers.

verawang_fall2010_5

And of course, this collection had loads of black detail. I love the nude underlay of this black dress which softens the look; this is definitely an option for the fashion-forward bride.

verawang_fall2010_3

The dress had layers of lace and pleated fabric. The detail was incredible, and oh so delicate.

verawang_fall2010_2

I love the contrast of the structured bodice here with the net overlay. I absolutely adore the crisscross detail on the back of the dress.

verawang_ko_brides

This dress was a study in sculpting layers. I love the repetition of this theme throughout the collection. And oh yes, that’s me in the pink in the front row… I had to pinch myself several times to make sure I was really there.
