Color Palette: Punchy Red-Orange

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

I’m eating up this bold color, what i like to call “punchy red-orange.” Mixed with white, this color combo just feels like the incarnation of the swinging sixties.

Ummm… How awesome is this very modern, red-orange, dollhouse? I covet it so… And the most awesome sixty’s couch with the most perfect pillows ever? Add it to the covet list too.

I love vintage or antique anything, and that’s why I’m loving Found Vintage Rentals. They are a rental company for weddings and private events and they have so many cute vintage props, tables, chairs and accesories that you create that “Anthropologie” look for your wedding day with ease.

I love a good farmhouse table and they have a bunch to choose from. Not to mention suitcases, a great prop for photo booths, welcome tables or the seating card table.

Oh yes, and they have vintage containers and old glass which I’m totally obsessed with. Check out their inventory here. Happy designing!

Fifty Flowers approached me to do a little photo shoot using their fun Christmas Carnation Flower Pack.

holiday_table

I used a seersucker runner and then created a garland down the table of ornaments and red and white carnations.

event_design_christmas

I love the way ornaments reflect light!

holiday_table2

I used some fun soda pop cans in my color scheme of red and white.

Above, I hung ornaments at different heights.

Votive candles added a lovely glow.

For a favor, homemade peanut brittle in mason jars with seersucker detail, adds a tasty touch along with festive presents.

I think I’m in love with the packaging for these sweet little bars of soap.

You can find them here. They’re a part of French Paper’s product line of gifts called Pop Ink. It’s the perfect pick-me-up present for anyone who loves shoes. And I definitely know someone who loves shoes…

Anthropologie Wedding- The Details

I love vintage suitcases and I thought holding fans would be so cute.

©kirstenellis058

I tied grosgrain ribbons in two colors to the base of the fans to add some color.

©kirstenellis139

For the flower girls I found these copper candles holders that were the perfect scale for their baskets.

©kirstenellis111

I tied each side with grosgrain ribbon and filled them with baby’s breath.

The flower girls were too cute!

For favors, Santa Barbara Preserves made rose jelly and put these in adorable mini canning jars.

©kirstenellis068

We used the same dashed pattern on the napkin as a border for the label. Santa Barbara Preserves custom made rose jelly, but she can make any flavor (her habanero raspberry jam is so good!)

mantle_books_marklund

I’m a huge bibliophile, and I love the look of this pretty stack of books on an all white mantle (the elephant is pretty great as well).

books_jimfranco

This is pretty close to what my house looks like right now– stacks of books everywhere (I’m moving!), though minus the awesome Gothic inspired bench and table.

anthropologie_books

And speaking of pretty books, have you seen these clothbound books by Penguin? I don’t care much for Dickens, but that book cover is to die for. And, oh yes, these books are available at my all time favorite store, Anthropologie.

Real Wedding, Mary & Josh: Reception

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

mj_paisleywedding_reception7

The cake, the only traditional element of the wedding, took center stage. I had the florist bring plain boxes so we could wrap the paisley fabric around them and I had a custom made runner made from the same fabric.

mj_paisleywedding_reception

My hand cut letters of Mr & Mrs were hung on the bride and groom’s chairs at their sweetheart table.

mj_paisleywedding_reception2

The carnation letters were moved fom the ceremony gate to the reception.

mj_paisleywedding_reception8

The bride and groom took photos on their vespas during cocktail hour and used the “love” sign I made.

mj_paisleywedding_reception6

Toasts started before the food stations opened, and included a song by the bride’s brother and sister.

m&j_wedding2

Props were setup next to the vintage photo booth and guests took some hilarious photos for the bride and groom’s scrapbook.

mj_paisleywedding_reception13

And they danced and danced and danced…

mj_paisleywedding_reception14

Meanwhile my assistants setup the favors by the valet station. I bought Paulette’s Macaroons (so yummy!) and used clear boxes with a sticker of the couple monogram.

mj_paisleywedding_reception16

At the end of the night the couple left in their dad’s vintage car.

And lived happily ever after…

Special thanks to all the vendors!

Real Wedding, Mary & Josh: Ceremony

And now onto the wedding! Guests were greeted with the couple’s first initial on the gate to the ceremony location. Valet took guests cars and directed them to the main lawn for the ceremony.

mj_paisleywedding2

The program fans were placed on each guest chair.

mj_paisleywedding1

The ceremony aisle was lined with rose petals in a paisley pattern.

The bride and groom met each other before the ceremony and took photos.

Guests began to arrive an enjoy their program fans.

mj_paisleywedding5

And the ceremony started….

Flip flops were standing by for ladies who needed them for the walk to reception.

And were placed under a palm tree.

Mary & Josh: Invitations

The invitations were created by Christine of cevd. I loved the envelop liner and the pattern she created for the invite itself.

Mary & Josh: Just Married Sign

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

signage_justmarried

The getaway car for the bride and groom would be the father of the bride’s classic car from the 1930′s. I made the “Just Married” sign out of card stock, ribbon and used the font from their invitations.

kellyoshiroevents_production

Then on the day of the wedding I hung the sign on the back of the vintage car. Here’s me in action getting the sign perfectly straight.

kellyoshiroevents_production2

Once done, I hopped into my golf cart (which are so fun drive) and went back to ceremony.

kellyoshiroevents_production5

My assistants, Megan & Mariana, stayed behind to be “car models…”

And take the photographer’s assistant to the reception to get detail shots.

Mary & Josh: Fabric Letters

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

signage_paisleywedding_love2

I knew I wanted to make a prop for the bride and groom portraits so I decided to hand cut “love” out of the paisley fabric. To do this I printed “love” in large letters on my printer and cut out the letters to create a template.  I pinned the template to the fabric to cut the letters out. The I took the template and pinned it to stiff yellow card stock to cut out a second letter which would serve as the backing for the sign.

signage_paisleywedding_love

I repeated this same process for “Mr” and “Mrs” these letters were used on their chairs at their sweetheart table.

Mary & Josh: Signage

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

signage_paisleywedding_supplies

Since this wedding featured food stations, it was important to make the typical dinner menu sign tie into the decor and feature paisley once again. I took foam core and cut it to the right size for the menus. Then I wrapped the paisley fabric around the foamcore like a present and hot glued the fabric closed.

signage_paisleywedding_supplies2

From there, I printed the menus and other signage using the fonts that were featured on their invitations.

signage_paisleywedding

The wedding took place at the father of the bride’s estate, but the ceremony was held next door on their neighbor’s lawn. To get from the ceremony area to the reception guests would have to walk through the bride’s dad’s jungle ravine to get to the reception. We provided flip flops for the ladies so it would be a more comfortable to walk to the reception.

signage_paisleywedding2

Since the jungle ravine area was landscaped with many different paths, the florist and I decided that a trail of flower petals would be the best way to lead guests up the reception. I used the couple’s monogram and the same font from their invitation (by cevd) on a large poster board that would be placed on the bridge that lead into the ravine and invited guests “to follow the petals to the party.”

Mary & Josh: Inspiration Board

Monday, November 16th, 2009

M&J_inspirationboard_2.0

The couple wanted a very funky, retro inspired party, rather than a traditional wedding reception. Seating, would be small cocktail tables and dinner would be four food stations served on small plates. They knew off the bat that they wanted their photos taken on their vespas and that large light bulb strands would be strung overhead. They also knew they wanted paisley featured throughout the design. Finding the right paisley proved to the toughest part of the design. I found one option that would work, but the fabric company had stopped making that design. I even looked in New York when I was there for the B-List and had no luck finding the right paisley. Finally, in May I went once again to Michael Levine’s in downtown Los Angeles and found the perfect paisley.

paisley

The paisley incorporated their colors, cobalt blue and goldenrod yellow, and had little funky 60′s style flowers throughout the pattern. I put in my order for 30 yards of fabric and had the fabric shipped to my linen vendor to make runners for the cocktail tables, cake table, and food stations. I took a swatch of the  paisley to the cake vendor, Rosebuds, and they were able to pipe the pattern onto their cake. I also sent the fabric to the florist, Collage, so she could use it as a reference for the paisley pattern of rose petals I wanted down the aisle. Once the fabric was found the rest of the details came almost immediately.

Orange and aqua vignette? Too fabulous! I love the contrasting shapes and different textures of the vases.

orange_blue_aqua_bowl_dashawright

I love these nestled bowls of orange and aqua. I kind of want to redo my whole office in this color scheme.
